Chapter 12

Not long after hanging up with Boone, Stone parked at the nearest marina. All three got out and almost immediately spotted Watts’ boat tied to the end of one of the piers.

As they walked toward the end of the floating pier where Watts and his boat were located, Watts saw them coming, spread his arms wide, and said, “Amigos! My baby’s all fixed up and ready to go! Where are we going this time?”

“Spence Island,” Stone replied.

“Well, let’s get loaded up. Shall we?” Watts replied.

Stone told Watts, “You remember Davenport, don’t you?”

“Sure do,” Watts replied. So, here’s what we’re going to do. You and Cross will have to squeeze together on the bench seat in front of the console. Of course, that leaves none other than Stone riding with me. Get situated while I untie the boat and push us off.”

All three put on their life jackets and took their seats. Before long, they were speeding across Lake Murray to Spence Island. After the fifteen-minute trip, Watts reduced the boat’s throttle as they slowly pulled up to the oddly shaped island.

As they slowly circled the island, Watts said, “There’s a small beach along the opposite side of the island. I will swing around there so we can pull right up to shore.”

A few minutes later, everyone aboard felt the boat lurch to a sudden stop as the boat’s bow hit the sandy beach. All three watched as Watts opened a compartment on the bow and pulled out a large length of rope. He tied one end to a cleat on the bow, then jumped off the boat onto the beach.

“You guys coming, or are you going to stay on the boat?” Watts asked.

“We’re coming! I was just wondering what you were doing with the rope,” Stone replied.

“Considering what happened the last time, we were out here, I thought I would put us on the beach this time. Now, all I gotta do is tie us off to one of these trees, and we should be good.”

“Wait, what happened last time?” Davenport asked.

“You don’t want to know,” Watts replied, shaking his head. “Not my finest hour.”

Once the boat was tied up, Watts said, “Okay, let’s move inland. There is nothing on this island but trees and underbrush. It is a bit bigger than the other islands, though, so we might want to consider splitting up to cover more ground faster.”

Everyone agreed, then Watts looked at Stone, smiled, and said, “Well, I guess that means you’re with me.”

“Nope,” Cross replied sternly, “She’s my partner, I go where she goes.”

“Alright, Alright. I’ll take Davenport then,” Watts said, much to Stone's amusement.

The two teams were separated by fifteen yards, and each duo slowly and methodically worked their way to the coordinates provided by the latest QR code, looking for anything unusual as they went.

Twenty minutes into their search, Cross called out, “I’ve got a body!”

Everyone converged on the spot where Cross was standing. As they approached, everyone could plainly see there was yet
